How is burstable bandwidth billed?
NYI monitors your bandwidth usage at 5-minute intervals and records it. We take this information and arrange it in a number line from lowest to highest. The top 5% of values are removed from the number line, and the new top value represents the 95th percentile. This is the amount you are billed at. If that amount happens to be below your committed bandwidth amount (typically 1, 10, or 100Mbps), you do not pay any additional charges. If it's more, you will be billed for the extra usage.
Here's an example. Your bandwidth has been sampled 100 times over the course of a day. Of that, here's the top 10 highest samples.
1.2Mbps 1.5Mbps 3.5Mbps 4Mbps 5Mbps 6Mbps 7Mbps 15Mbps 19Mbps 100Mbps
So your bandwidth usage during this time was as low as 1.2Mbps and as high as 100Mbps. Never fear, with 95th percentile billing, the top 5% of values are discarded, in this case the 6, 7, 15, 19, and 100Mbps values. The 95th percentile is 5Mbps, and you are billed for that amount.
